How I Tread My Own Path: Leo’s Story

tread your own path leoHOW I found my Mojo without losing the good stuff…and bought my own home!

I admit, before I found Barefoot, I wasn’t doing terribly in the finance department – I just wasn’t particularly organised.

Like a lot of Gen Ys, I was kinda just muddling through, earning a good income and spending it. All my pay went into one no-interest transaction account, I paid-off credit cards randomly when I had the dough, and I’d lost track of how many superannuation accounts I’d, well, lost track of.

But, I guess my story proves that you’re never too old to listen to mum’s advice. My mum bought The Barefoot Investor for me because she knew I had to start doing something about my finances.

The book really hit me at exactly the right time, at a point in my life where I was ready to really set myself up for the future.

I read the book and I was like ‘Oh my God, this is awesome.’”

When I heard Scott was coming to Perth, I knew I needed tickets – even though they were sold out. My only chance was to call a local radio station while Scott was on air and try to score some free tickets. Amazingly, I won two tickets to the show. Of course, I took my mum along.

Now, I’m walking own path: I’ve sorted all my super accounts, I’ve got a Mojo account, and I’ve taken control of my spending. What Scott said about investing in myself really hit home too – I’ve started a Master’s degree and have moved to a better job.

My proudest achievement, though, is buying a two-bedroom place with my partner. Six months in and we’ve already smashed almost twenty percent of the loan, and we plan to have it paid off in five years.

All that, and without losing the Gen Y dream – I still have a life.

It’s great to know I’m looking after my financial future, yet I can still splurge on the important stuff. We always have fresh flowers in the house, and plan one big holiday a year. We also make regular short trips to the Margaret River wine region a few hours south of Perth.

I guess they’re just the little things you budget for to make life worth living. Particularly a Margaret River Cab Sav…”

Thanks Barefoot!
Leo, Perth.
