On my first trip to Thailand I couldn’t wait to get to the legendary party island of Koh Phangan.
After two (long) flights and a rough boat trip, we had finally arrived – to a ghost town.
Wasn’t this the party island that was made famous by the movie The Beach?
Where were the hardcore backpackers, the fire twirlers, or the full moon party ravers?
Turns out we’d arrived much too early. It was only 3pm. As the sun went down the techno music started from a hill above the beach.
Slowly people started to wake up and shake off the hangover from the night before and start preparing for the next one.
What followed was a crazy three nights and I think I was there three weeks. I’ve been back half a dozen times since.
Thankfully there are no Starbucks, McDonald’s, or anyone above the age of 30 – OK, so there are a few old hippies who refused (or forgot) to leave.
This magical island is one of the few places in the world where you can get an (un-airconditioned) beach bungalow perched on wonderful white sandy shores for less than ten bucks a night (food will set you back another fiver a day).
Koh Phangan is the perfect place for the budget-strapped backpacker to live like a king for a week for less than it costs to fill the tank at home.

Hi Scott, we are thinking of moving from a large house to either a retirement village or to buy a small unit. Can you please give us your opinion, thanks Scott.
Hey Scott, did you arrange the trip through a travel agent or did you just go directly? How do you book accommodation? When is the best time to go?
